The Adelaide Superkart Club conducted a club race meeting at Mallala on Sunday 29 October. The meeting incorporated round 4 of the Superkart Cup (for the Gearbox Karts only) and also incorporated the Geoff Luscombe Memorial Trophy. The memorial trophy is in honour of Geoff Luscombe, a former 100cc Superkarter, who sadly passed away last year. The Trophy is contested by all classes and is presented to the Best Overall Driver on the day. This year it was won by Yiani Harpas. Well Done Yiani.
Unlike the last meeting, the weather conditions were very good. Entries were also at a good level with the Gearbox field with 9 entrants (8 x 250 Inters + 1 x 125) and there were 21 Rotax Max entries.
Racing was excellent with many hard fought victories, particularly in Rotax Div 1 where Ilya Harpas, Michael Rogers and Stratton Limberis were within a whisker of each other swapping the lead consistently lap after lap throughout the four heats. There were equally good battles throughout the field in all races and classes. Great racing by everyone.
The Club and racers again thank all the officials, many of whom stayed overnight at the track because of a twilight race meeting held at the track on the Saturday.

All individual practice and race results are available on the NATSOFT site. The 2006 Australian Superkart GP highlighted some of the best racing that local Superkarting has to offer. This was also the third round of the 2006 South Australian Superkart Youth Championship.
The day started wet but the rain stayed away after the first practice session and despite constant strong wind throughout the day, racing was at its best. Despite the weather, there was a great turnout with 33 entrants including a respectable field of 9 gearbox karts. The Inters were into it with enthusiasm and top racing ensued. The Max class never fails to impress with close competitive racing and the GP was no exception.
The trophy presentation and a pleasant BBQ with the officials from SAMROA at the end of the day rounded out another successful day for Superkarting.
Gearbox
9 drivers (7xInter & 2x125) showed up to race. Nobody did anything too special in the first practice as the track was still damp with several drivers deciding to wait till the next session. In the second practice things started to hot up a little when Ron Valentine and Robert Oakley dropped into the 1:9s.
Yiani Harpas cruised to victory in Heat 1 in low 1:7:4s, Ron Valentine was chasing but could only make the .9s with Oakley, Burford and Mark Hanson (our WA rep) all in the .10s, Dean McGinty was just holding out Tony Lappas with Dave Prest and Peter Knispel a few seconds back.
Heat 2 was much the same, good steady racing with Yiani going away in front of Mark Hanson in second and Brett Purdie in third.
In the third heat, Ron Valentine was back in front and into the mid .7s, Yiani was hot on his tail with identical lap times. Robert Oakley was still trying to sort out the Honda and had Dean McGinty and Brett Purdie following closely.
The stage was set for a good 12 lap GP with Harpas on pole, Ron Valentine alongside him and Oakley on the second row. Harpas had a bad start but did well to recover whilst Valentine was driving away from the rest who were all tangled up fighting for space. Harpas worked hard to catch the tailenders and was through to 4th by the end of the second lap. On lap 4, Yiani rolled off a 1:6:9 lap, stunning in the conditions and found himself right up the tail of the race leader starting lap 5. Valentine wasn't about to give in easily and it was down to a braking duel a lap later. Yiani managed to capture the inside running and squeezed through to take the lead and held on for a fabulous hard fought victory. Robert Oakley came home third.
Yiani Harpas was the overall GP winner and with lap times cracking the 1:06 barrier, his impressive driving and win in the GP final was well deserved.
ROTAX MAX
Due to the weather conditions lap times were a little slower than usual. After the two practice sessions Michael Rogers, Shaun Jones and Stratton Limberis filled the first three grid positions.
A good start for Heat 1 saw Daniel Ramerman grab #1 position on the track by Turn 1 and holding onto the lead until Turn 5, dropping into 2nd and holding that position until on the last lap yielding 2 positions at Turn 7 and finishing 4th. Michael Rogers, Shaun Jones and Stratton Limberis took 1, 2 and 3 respectively.
Heat 2 saw Several incidents on lap 3 in the middle of the field but the leaders were well ahead of the trouble and stayed out of trouble. The top 4 spots were identical to Heat 1. Michael Rogers, Shaun Jones, Stratton Limberis and Daniel Ramerman took 1, 2, 3 and 4 respectively.
Heat 3 was basically incident free and the results were the same as the previous two heats. Michael Rogers, Shaun Jones, Stratton Limberis and Daniel Ramerman took 1, 2, 3 and 4 respectively.
After the mandatory three 6 lap heats to determine the final race grid positions for the GP race, Michael Rogers had the magic number one spot with Shaun Jones on grid 2, Stratton Limberis on 3 and Daniel Ramerman on grid 4. Michael had won all three heats and after a good start led the race for ten laps. It looked like Michael's day until on lap 10 having to avoid a backmarker he managed to break the spark plug with his elbow which put an end to his GP hopes. It must be said that with Michael's bad luck at the Nationals that it appears there is a fat lady out there watching him. Shaun Jones and Stratton grabbed the opportunity and slugged it out to the bitter end with Shaun taking the win. Stratton finished in 2nd place with Daniel Ramerman taking 3rd. Matt Bryant, Geoff King and Gavin Newman were always a podium chance as the race progressed but couldn't quite bridge the gap established by the race leaders.
Presidents Cup
The President's Team Cup was won by the Max Division 1 class with Michael Rogers, Matt Bryant and Geoff King combining to top the points table.
Youth Championship
Michael Rogers completed another winning round in the 2006 YC at this meeting and holds on to a handy lead. Ilya Harpas, despite a bad day, is still in second spot and is Michael's main challenger for the championship title although he may be battling to bridge the gap on the scoreboard at the next meeting which is the final round of the championship. Shaun Pannowitch also added points to his tally and is currently in third place. Daniel Ramerman increased his chances of winning the championship with an excellent outing, gaining lots of points and moves into fourth place.

All individual practice and race results are available on the NATSOFT site
Saturday Qualifying saw Stewart Campbell post a blistering 1:18.64, with the next closest driver nearly .8sec away. Just 1.9 seconds seperated 4th-19th on the grid after the first session.
Session 2 produced close times, but not as quick as the first session. Shaun Jones was fastest with a 1:19.7, and just two seconds separated 1st-17th on the grid.
Stewart Campbell from SA took out Race 1 on Sunday, with interstate boys making up the next seven grid positions. With a fastest lap of 1:19.74 he finished 1.4 seconds clear of Sam Zavaglia (NSW).
Michael Choido (VIC) took out race 3, with Doug Ward (NSW) and Rob Trimmer (NSW) not too far behind. Fastest lap was by Michael Rogers (SA) with a 1:19.5. Congrats to Mike for being the first South Aussie over the line in 5th.
1st, 2nd and 3rd for SA in race 4. Congratulations to Michael Rogers for the win, Stewart Campbell in 2nd and Shaun Jones in 3rd. Fastest lap of the race was by Michael Rogers with a 1:19.1

Mallala turned out some perfect weather, and some quick lap times were posted by all classes. As usual the MAXs provided great racing.
ROTAX MAX
In Div 1, Shaun Jones took out three from four heats. Stratton Limberis and Geoff King closely followed, with Stratton winning heat two.
Gerritt Ruff took out Div 2, closely followed by Daniel Ramerman.
Ron Goldfinch took out the Masters, followed by Barrie Hopkins.
125cc Gearbox
David Prest and Dean McGinty were out in force posting consistent lap times in their 125cc Gearbox karts. Unfortunately, Geoff had an engine faliure after heat 2 which put him out for the day. Dean McGinty was having handling issues but still finished the day without any hassle.
250cc International
Ron Valentine took out the 250 Inter class; maybe the new colour scheme helped...who said red goes faster? There was plenty of close racing and fast times posted by all the Inter boys. Yiani Harpas shined with some very low 1:07s and will be a force to be reckoned with in years to come. Gerry Siebert was very quick with a new engine, and will be one to watch out for on Phillip Island. Ralf Rupprecht posted the fastest time of the day with a 1:07 flat.

Brett Purdie wasn't too far behind with Chas Maddern following. Dean McInty and Jeff Burton had some some teething issues and unfortunately DNF'd in a few of the heats.
125cc Rotax MAX - Sponsored by Profile Wardrobes and Coopers Brewery
A grid of 21 karts fronted he max field to provide some exciting racing from both the drivers and spectators point of view. Michael Rogers again took the weekend convincingly, and looks like the man to beat this year. Stratton Limberis , Shaun Jones and Geoff King closely followed.
NGB Junior
Andrew Chapman is the only entrant in the class, but he races with all the other 125 Rotax MAX karts so he will definately be one to watch out for when he moves into the senior class. Keep it up!

The first race weekend for 2006 welcomed several new members to racing, and got everyone else out of their lounge-room chairs and back into the racing seat! Mallala turned out a great day and the famous Mallala flies we're still in hiding, a great weekend of racing was had by all. We welcomed several new members, and one of them won in his third heat!
250cc International
Two new 250cc drivers had their first race, and it all went very well. Brett Purdie won the third heat due to Chas Maddern having a DNF, not a bad way to start you first ever race weekend! Ever consistent Chas Maddern won every heat except one. Yiani Harpas was unfortunately sidelined at the start of the day, but still topped the time sheets and I'm sure will be someone to look out for this year.
125cc Non-Gearbox - Sponsored by Profile Wardrobes and Coopers Brewery. Twenty Karts fronted the grid for the 125cc Non-gearbox races. There was plenty of close raciong with new karts being tested and drivers itching to race. Michael Rogers easily took 1st place, followed by Stewart Campbell in 2nd and Stratton Limberis in 3rd.
